Portal Snakes

Portal Snakes, the lifeblood of the 5th Dimensional Portal. Pumping the Plasmas of Five from deep within the Forest of Nif, they wind through the countryside like giant elevated black snakes, feeding not only the Portal but the vast collection of mechanical monoliths the BISH! have spread throughout. Many speculate on the mission of these machines but no one knows for sure; all that can be said is that somehow they have kept the Flea Uprising at bay for Century plus twenty.⠀

Cold and rubbery to the touch, the heavy braided texture is familiar to the ‘Mekanics’, those BISH! that have pledged their life to the care and guardian of the pipes. Suspended from balloons, the Mekanics tend to the pipes lovingly, as if they are children of their own. To the few that know the truth, the balloons, the care, the rituals, are all essential to keeping the equilibrium of the Plasmas within – one small current, one hard jolt, could see the Plasmas erupt into blue fame that would spread relentlessly through the Portal Snake network, rendering it useless and, more horrific still, cause the Portal to close. What would happen then, not even the BISH! want to speculate.⠀

At set points in the landscapes, Portal Snake pumping stations tower into the sky. Embedded into rock spires that litter the land, the Portal Snakes feed in, and out again, giving them the appearance from afar of giant Hojaks, the tentacled monsters that inhabit the oceans and make habit of eating ships.⠀

Villagers of the Empty Lands of Wan avoid the Portal Snakes at all cost, eventhough they tower far above. Superstitions claim they carry liquid evil from the soul of The Forest of Nif, pumping it to the coloured seas that touch the Lands of Wan at three points; the dull hum, and occasional glowing of the vast pipes only fuel the fears and superstitions, which grow in claim and influence over time.⠀
